Caring.com’s Senior Happiness Index is a nationwide evaluation of how well older Americans are thriving in each U.S. state. The index considers several key factors: overall happiness, cost of living, life expectancy, health outcomes for people over 60, and the availability of senior centers. By measuring these elements, the index highlights which states offer the best conditions for seniors to lead fulfilling and connected lives.
Utah Leads the Nation for Senior Contentment

Utah ranks number one in the nation with a Senior Happiness Index score of 7.69 out of 10. The state stands out for its exceptional health metrics, low senior isolation rates—only 21.5% of older adults live alone—and high community engagement.
More than 40% of seniors in Utah volunteer regularly, reinforcing strong social ties and a sense of purpose. This powerful combination of health, connection, and activity makes Utah the top-ranked state for senior happiness.
Idaho Offers Natural Beauty and Welcoming Communities

Idaho takes the second spot with a score of 7.38. Seniors in Idaho enjoy beautiful outdoor surroundings and a strong network of senior centers. The state is also known for being tax-friendly, particularly by not taxing Social Security income. With relatively low senior isolation rates and an appealing lifestyle, Idaho continues to attract older adults looking for both peace and community.
Connecticut and Delaware Tie for Third

Connecticut and Delaware share the third position with identical scores of 7.01. Connecticut boasts the third-highest life expectancy in the U.S., along with a low percentage of uninsured seniors at just 7.2%. The state also offers rich cultural opportunities and community engagement for its older residents.
Delaware, on the other hand, ranks highly in both health and happiness indicators. It provides a low cost of living, is tax-friendly for retirees, and has one of the lowest rates of seniors living alone. These advantages make Delaware a particularly attractive option for retirees who want both affordability and quality of life.
Nebraska Ranks Fifth: Affordable and Connected

Nebraska rounds out the top five with strong marks for affordability and support. Seniors here benefit from a cost of living nearly 37% lower than the national average, with monthly expenses around $1,917. Nebraska also provides a healthy balance of mental well-being and social support, helping older adults stay connected and engaged.
Aloha to Happiness: Hawaii in Sixth Place

Hawaii ranks sixth in the nation for senior happiness and offers a unique blend of natural beauty, long life expectancy, and strong community health outcomes. The state has the lowest percentage of seniors living alone and the highest average life expectancy in the country.
These factors, combined with a focus on senior well-being, make Hawaii a highly desirable location for older adults seeking both longevity and lifestyle.
