12 Jobs That AI Can’t Touch (Ever)

There is a lot of buzz about AI taking over peoples’ jobs. It is both overwhelming and fear-inducing for most. While AI is undoubtedly great at performing specific tasks, it cannot replace certain professions. Let’s explore 12 jobs that AI can never replace.

Psychologists and Therapists

This profession requires a human touch that is difficult for AI to replicate. Even sophisticated AI fails to replicate empathy and understand the complex human emotions necessary for guidance. It cannot interpret patients’ non-verbal cues and lacks emotional intelligence to provide a therapeutic experience. AI tools in healthcare have been accused of discriminating against people based on their race and disability status, so it is safe to assume that people will always choose psychologists and therapists over AI.

Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers like nurses and doctors are indispensable. Even if AI is used for diagnostic support or analyzing vast amounts of medical data to predict potential health challenges, it cannot replace healthcare workers. One of the biggest drawbacks of AI in healthcare is its potential to make incorrect or harmful predictions that can result in a life-or-death situation. Various reports have highlighted how AI fails in real-world clinical settings, making it unfit to replace healthcare workers.

Social Workers

All social workers deal with individuals facing intense life challenges. Interacting with people demands empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity to better understand what the other person is going through. While AI can supplement the work done by social workers, it cannot replace them. Some studies highlighted the inherent racial bias in AI, especially against people of color. It alone makes it impossible for AI to replace any social worker.

Chefs

Most chefs have a remarkable ability to cook lip-smacking dishes while multitasking in the kitchen. AI robots have entered the culinary space, but their limitations make them unfit to replace chefs. AI lacks the sensory perception and spontaneity needed to adjust dishes on the fly. Additionally, robot chefs cannot make real-time decisions or innovate new dishes to sustain in fine dining restaurants.

Artists

There is a growing debate and concern about AI taking over every artist’s job. While AI tools have improved significantly in creating good artwork, they still have imperfections. It is easy to differentiate between a portrait designed by AI and a human. Some report that AI still fails to draw realistic-looking hands. It often draws the hands backward or includes only three fingers at times. Such limitations can never make AI replace genuine artists.

Spiritual Teachers

The rise of AI chatbots offering spiritual guidance looked sketchy from the beginning. These tools can help find spiritual text from a vast library of data, but they can never assist people in their spiritual journey as teachers. When the American Bible Society surveyed people about AI and spirituality, nearly 68% of people believed that AI cannot help them with their spiritual practices. No matter how much AI evolves, it can never win people’s trust in the spiritual domain.

Diplomats

Diplomacy relies heavily on complex human skills, understanding of cultural nuances, navigating complex situations, and many other soft skills that AI lacks. AI is not empathetic and cannot read non-verbal cues. AI robots can be installed in embassies to welcome visitors or answer common questions via consular chatbots, but they can never be used to represent a country in its full complexity. This job will forever be reserved for humans.

Event Planners

Event planning is an incredibly complex task that demands spontaneity, emotional intelligence and the ability to adapt to unexpected situations. While AI can automate repetitive tasks, it cannot understand a client’s nuanced needs or build a good rapport with them. AI generates ideas based on the data patterns it has been trained on, so it can only suggest generic and uninspiring event themes. Additionally, it lacks complex problem-solving abilities and critical thinking – both of which are central to successful event planning. Since AI cannot handle complex problem-solving, it won’t be able to replace event planners.

Journalists

AI tools are being used to write stories and news content at scale, but the results aren’t as desirable as the news organizations expected. Most of the content written by AI tools is generic and lacks factual accuracy. CNET is a popular website that was called out for publishing AI-written journalistic articles full of errors. After this incident, most organizations became wary of publishing AI content and started relying more on real journalists. Even if AI evolves with time, it won’t replace skilled journalists.

Caregivers

Caregivers are often hired to provide physical and emotional assistance to senior citizens. AI robots can support caregivers by monitoring an older adult’s health data, reminding them about medicines, etc., but they can never replace caregivers. Even the most sophisticated AI lacks the emotional intelligence needed to support caregivers. It cannot maintain empathetic and nuanced communication to respond to an elderly’s emotional needs. Some seniors may also dislike constantly interacting with machines, making caregivers irreplaceable.

Manual Trades

Manual trades like electricians, plumbers, etc., will always remain irreplaceable. These jobs demand a high level of physical skills, real-time decision-making, and complex interactions- none of which AI can replicate. If the data used to train the AI turns out inaccurate, AI can make dangerously incorrect recommendations. It can result in quality concerns in the offered services and severely hamper the client-trader relationship. AI can never replace manual traders for these reasons.

Teachers

AI is bringing massive transformations in education, but it isn’t fully equipped to replace great teachers. The best AI tools are smart enough to create personalized learning pathways, grade assignments, etc., but they are emotionally blind. The responses from AI tools generally lack context, empathy, the desired tone, and even some humor. All this can make children quickly disinterested from learning, making them irrelevant for teacher jobs.
