Realistic, thoughtful, and optimistic, these are the words that will drive this article.
Let’s talk the future, the future of artificial intelligence. Sigh!
Artificial intelligence is an ever increasing in popularity as a word and as an age changing technology.
‘AI is changing the world’, now sounds like a cliché.
I think, I would credit artificial intelligence’s 21st Century popularity to the movie industry; partially. Most millennials and Gen Zs first heard about AIs from the movies (at least, that was the case for me).
More so, AI’s rising popularity is highly a result of the great work being carried out by AI researchers and developers.
It’s because of their works that we now have AI technologies in almost every piece of cutting edge tech.
When AI enthusiast say ‘AI is everywhere’, it is really because it’s everywhere: AI is in almost every piece of contemporary tech.
There is AI in smartphones, smart watches and smart speakers.
When you make purchases on Amazon, search for information on Google, watch YouTube videos, go through your Facebook, Instagram or Twitter newsfeed and listen to your favorite music on Spotify; you are engaging with artificial intelligence.
Here are the Best AI apps for android and iOS devices in 2020.
In the face of all that’s going on with AI, I can’t help but wonder what the future with artificial intelligence will look like and I guess, so do you.
9 Ways Artificial Intelligence will Change the Future
Am not an ancient prophet. And I think we don’t need a soothsayer to put pieces together and understand or know how artificial intelligence is going to change the future.
AIs are already changing our world whether you know it or not. They have invaded everywhere (every sector), from the transportation sector to Fintech, and even our personal lives.
At this point, by studying the AI trends, it’s no news that AIs will keep getting better and better. The future will see artificial intelligence systems become dominant, adopted everywhere, in everything and by almost everyone.
Artificial intelligence will have to affect so many areas of our life in order to affect our future (the future). And am betting that AI will not just casually affect these areas, it will ruthlessly revolutionize them.
Here are some of the areas artificial intelligent will change and how it will change them:
Personal Life
Artificial intelligence will have a significant direct impact on personal lives in the future. In the coming months, years and decade AI will increasingly enter our personal lives; live intimately amongst us
.
Some of the ways artificial intelligence will invade (in a positive sense of the word, if at all there is any) our personal lives in the future are:
- Personal Assistance: The usual suspect. AIs are going to get incredibly better at being our own very personal assistants. And I bet, the future generation of AI personal assistants are going to relate with us with a high degree of emotional intelligence. They are going to feel more relatable than they are today.
- Companion Robots: Like in the movies, companion robots are going to play integral role in the lives of some of us (few of us, is probably more accurate) in the future. I could imagine that not everybody can afford to have them. They will expectedly have different forms, such as robotic pets, humanoid robots or take some random form.
- Social Media/Instant messaging: AIs are going to change how we communicate with other people, especially through instant messaging and social media platforms. Gmail’s introduction of the smart replies is one of those little baby steps. Sooner than later AIs will be championing how we say, what we say. And I would not be surprised if AIs autonomously reply our conversations for us (for starters, conversation we mark as low priority).
There are so many other ways AI will change the future of our personal life, but the above stands out, AIs will even have a say in who we will choose to go on a date with, how we manage our money and our career choices.
Transportation
With AI in the equation, the future of transportation is destined for a revolutionary change.
For some time, the drum of autonomous vehicles have been beating; loud and clear. Certainly, what AI will do in the transportation sector is summarized in one word: Autonomous.
Every major transport system will eventually become autonomous. There will be autonomous vehicles, aircraft and ships.
Transportation will no longer require direct human involvement. In fact, currently, Boeing 777 pilots spends seven minutes manually piloting the plane. And most of the seven minutes are spent in takeoff and landing.
What happens during most of the flight time is imply AI taking over control (Autopilot).
These things are happening now, imagine how the future would be when all these AI technologies powering these systems are advanced.
Business/Marketing
I could remember reading an article about how the internet revolutionize marketing and how business is done online today.
Right now, it feels as though am just re-writing that article, albeit, in a different way and with artificial intelligence being the driving force of the business/marketing revolution.
AI is going to do to business/marketing what the internet did to it decades ago.
Artificial intelligence will reorder how we do business and marketing. Even today, AI is already impacting online businesses, and becoming the driving force of business/marketing success.
Amazon is a simple example of AI’s introduction to online business. Amazon uses AI in a number of ways; it uses it to make highly relevant product recommendations, ranks product searches based on relevance to user, and generally, to personalize users’ shopping experience.
Online marketing is going to be personalized by AI, whether through AI Chatbots, AI Advertising, recommendation systems or something out of the blue.
With artificial intelligence, the future of business and marketing is personal.
Healthcare
I think healthcare is one of those areas where AI is flourishing and will continue to flourish.
As the saying goes “AI is saving lives”.
Artificial intelligence will be introduced even more in healthcare than it is today in the future.
And even then, the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare will not be to replace health practitioners completely like it will do to drivers but rather, AIs of the future will be deployed to augment humans.
There are surgical robots that relies on AI to aid medical surgeries today and these systems will get better and more relied on in the future.
Health practitioners will rely on AIs to carry out their jobs more efficiently and effectively. There is going to be more advance AI-Doctors that diagnoses patients better than human doctors in a number of ways.
The future of AI in healthcare is indeed promising.
Military
Sadly AIs won’t just be saving lives through healthcare, it will also be ending lives in order to save other lives. I guess that’s how warfare is justified.
End lives to save lives.
AI’s introduction in military will see the rise of robotic soldiers, autonomous strike drones and tanks, unmanned underwater vehicles and sophisticated anti-missile systems powered by AI, among others.
AI is already being exploited by several militaries, especially the US military. In September 2018, the Pentagon committed to spend $2 billion over the next five years through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop the new wave of AI technologies, this is according to futureoflife.org.
There will be more money going into developing military AIs and the results of these developments in the future will be AI powered military technologies (I guess that’s obvious).
Eventually, these AI military techs will be deployed heavily in the future.
Finance
Fintech is going to be more about AI technologies in this decade (2020s).
Financial technologies (Fintechs) will be built fundamentally on AI systems: A complicated way of saying AI will handle our money.
Whether it’s personal financing or corporate financing, they will eventually be handled by AIs.
AIs are going to do your investing for you, draft your monthly budget and generally ensure you stay financially responsible.
These systems will get better at detecting frauds and money laundering. An unfortunate future for money launders and internet fraudsters and a fortunate future for you, me and the society in general.
Have you been defrauded before? If yes (I have been), then you will definitely be elated with AIs exploitation in Anti-fraud systems. AIs of the future are going to be the worst nightmare of the people trying to fraudulently take our HARDearned bills.
Robotics
Artificial intelligence will breathe life into robots. Autonomous robots will rise to prominence as a result of future advances in AI-Robotics technologies.
With autonomous vehicles and aircraft already in the streets of the future and flying around respectively, it will be common to see robots in the streets of the future too. And also in our workspace and in Space.
I think AI robots will flourish most in space exploration.
Food
According to Intel, “the world will need to produce 50 percent more food by 2050”. There is a lot AI will do in other to produce more food that will sustain us.
Artificial intelligence will not just help us in food production, it will champion the cause of food production in the future.
The future of AI in food production will see autonomous systems handling most of the farming process. And on the other end of the spectrum, AI will greatly reduce food waste.
From farming to cooking, AI will have a dominant say in everything food.
Currently, AI is being deployed to help farmers get more from their land while using sustainable resources.
Education
Artificial intelligence technologies will transform education (formal and informal education) in a number of ways for different people, in different places.
More common will be personalized learning. AI will usher us into an era dominated by formal and informal personalized learning systems.
The future of learning will also be personal. From how we get information to how we consume them, everything would be personalized by AIs.
Already, AI technologies are making learning personalized through AI-powered learning apps, and smart content recommendation systems; for example.
The Idea for Artificial Intelligence
I think like must things artificial, artificial intelligence is a seed of human imagination and curiosity.
Imaginations and curiosity are essential part of who we are, they are integral part of our society.
We had no business building technologies that took us to space and eventually landed us on the moon.
But imaginations and curiosity plus everything in-between, said ‘going to space and landing on the moon was a priority’.
And yeah, we went to space and landed on the moon, and with no regrets (not that I can think of).
Imaginations and curiosity keeps us going, it makes life interesting and more exciting.
Without curiosity and imaginations, human life will be BORING: A capital BORING.
Artificial intelligence is one of those things brought about through our imaginations and pursued with curiosity.
The simple idea behind artificial intelligence is to create something that can replicate human intelligence.
When the founding fathers of artificial intelligence established the field in a Dartmouth Conference in 1956, one of them (Alan Turing) thought of AI as an artificial system that can trick an average human being into thinking it’s a human being (something called the Turing Test).
Thinking machines, that’s was what an AI was meant to be.
Today, AI is a lot more like what its founding fathers probably thought of. Current AIs have passed the famous Turing Test and yet we still don’t fell or agree that we now have fully Artificial Intelligent systems.
Our standard expectation of what could be defined as full AI is one that can replicate human intelligence in a level ‘equal’ to that of humans, at the very least.
AIs should be able to do everything a human being can do intellectually and do them completely autonomously (100% on their own).
Crazy!
Our imaginations and curiosities.
Will AIs replace Humans in the Future?
No they are not (at least not entirely). I think what AIs are doing today and will do better in the future, is to aid human intelligence. They are making us better.
Like Kurt Cagle from Cognitive World through of it, “Augmentation is likely to be, for some time to come ‘the way that most people will directly interact with Artificial Intelligence systems’”.
Artificial systems today are changing the world by augmenting human intelligence. Alexa (the AI personal assistant developed by Amazon) is not replacing your intelligence. It is designed to assist (augment) you to do things better, easier and faster.
The nearest future with artificial intelligence is going to be AIs augmenting human abilities; no doubt about that.
We won’t be seeing any AI that is capable of matching, let alone replace, human intelligence any time soon.
Even ‘the experts’ agree with this.
In the nearest future, we are going to see more advances in AI helping us out by mostly doing the dirty intelligent jobs for us. While we get our hands neat to carry out the jobs befitting our intelligence.
Things to Expect in the Future with Artificial Intelligence
Here are some things to expect are the future with AIs loom in the dark:
Advanced Narrow Artificial Intelligence Systems (Narrow AIs)
The AIs we have today are narrow AIs (AIs that can only perform specific intelligent tasks, like AI personal assistants, AI recommendation systems, AI Video Editing Tools and so on).
In this decade, narrow AIs are going to get better and more sophisticated. Advanced narrow AIs: a befitting name.
The nearest future of AI will be more about advanced narrow AIs augmenting society to do things betters.
So, you should keep an eye for an advanced Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, that are far more intelligent than what we’ve today.
And don’t expect to see an AI as characterized by Eva, in the movie Ex-Machina.
A New or Improved Approach to AI Development
AIs won’t just get better and better without the process of its development getting better and better.
Deep learning systems are currently the most advanced AI systems, they lead contemporary advancements in artificial intelligence over the past decade.
But deep learning has its own limitation as many AI researchers and developers are making this conclusion.
The current practice of deep learning cannot get us to where we want to be with AI Development. It has shown it has shortcomings like expert systems did.
In the future deep learning systems are either going to be improved/augmented or replaced by a different approach.
This is a really important information, because if you are interested in how AI will change the future, you should also be interested in how the future of AI will change.
General AIs
Will we have General AIs in the future?
This is a difficult question to answer even for the experts.
In the spirit of optimism, we will have General AIs in the future, the kind that can technically match human intelligence.
But maybe not the way some people picture it today.
Many years ago, men imagined that we will one day fly. And today, man can fly.
But definitely not the way it was imagined centuries ago.
We didn’t fly like the birds with wings (bird-like wings).
Funny!
Man’s ability to fly is simply objective and functional. And this is what we should expect with General AIs.
AIs cannot literally match human intelligence generally. But it can match human intelligence objectively, functionally and effectively; just like aircrafts and ‘man can fly’.
How to Prepare for the Future of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is not just a big deal, it’s a real deal. One thing is certain about artificial intelligence, which is that, it will change the order of today.
How do we (individuals, businesses and society in general) prepare for the change that artificial intelligence will bring?
The answer is simple; by preparing for the change.
As simple as it may sound, that’s the reality.
Many people and businesses get left behind really fast when they fail to prepare for changes brought about by major technological shifts (changes).
We saw that during the industrial revolution and in the internet’s boom; people and businesses were left behind.
The story goes the same; big names fall when they fail to adapt to major technological changes.
In order to avoid such pitfall and even leverage this expected change, we ought to consciously ready ourselves for the impeding changes AI will bring.
Here are some key ways/steps to prepare for the future of artificial intelligence:
- Get Informed: This is objectively key. You need to stay ahead of the AI trend information-wise. Get to know what artificial intelligence is all about, and follow current AI trends. If there is something new, you should know. Information (staying updated) is vital for adapting to change.
- Be an Active User of AI Technologies: Be Active. This is a no brainer, one fundamental way to prepare for the change AI will cause in the future, is to adapt to the changes it’s causing today, by actively using it. Whether you are a business or an individual, you need to start using AI technologies (smart devices, apps and other AI platforms). As a business, introduce AI technologies into your business, and as an individual, introduce AI systems consciously into your daily lives. And It gets better from there.
- AI Regulations: I think, this is one of the things we need to do pressingly as a society; AI development and deployment needs to be regulated. We need to control AI development/deployment through regulations before it blows up on our faces. If AI development and deployment goes bad, it’s going to be as bad as they say.
Wrapping Up
The future of artificial intelligence is promising, no doubt. Even AI technologies in play today are incredible in action.
See where our imaginations and curiosity has brought us.
The future will equally hinge on the power of our imaginations and curiosity.
Looking forward to the future; the future of artificial intelligence.
