AI Agents Are Taking Over Reddit—And This Startup Is Behind It

While most AI innovations and applications have received applause from the general public, the recently launched Astral AI agents were welcomed with intense criticism and backlash.

It is one of the few AI applications that can rip off online forums, such as Reddit, of their authenticity and humanness, making them a dumping ground for marketing slop. You must read this article if you frequently use forums to seek suggestions, interact with others, form genuine connections, etc. It will help you understand more about AI agents and how they may disrupt your overall experience and forums in general.

Before learning about Astral and its effect on online forums, ensure you understand what AI agents exactly are to grasp the context better. AI agents are sophisticated software programs that autonomously accomplish tasks based on their interactions with the environment and collected data.

Their most distinctive feature is their ability to independently choose the best course of action to achieve a particular goal. These agents are becoming more popular in businesses because they can perform tasks without human intervention. All AI agents work in three stages – goal determination, information acquisition, and task implementation.

Astral Plans to Rip Reddit Off its Humanness

Astral, a marketing automation startup, was in the news for all the wrong reasons. This startup is offering AI agents as a service to bring LinkedIn-tier marketing slop on Reddit. Its founder, Savannah Feder, introduced Astral AI agents via a video published on X. The video demonstrated how these AI agents can navigate through Reddit to automatically write comments promoting any product a client wants to sell.

Like Google and Anthropic’s AI agents, Astral AI agents can control your local browser to complete any task. It begins by taking screenshots of the content in a browser window, followed by a thorough analysis of the captured data. Based on the analysis, AI agents decide what to do next based on the given prompt, ultimately sending the finalized commands to the mouse.

You can view it as virtual agents who perform the task independently based on your goal. While revolutionary, it’s sparking concerns among forum users that the tech will fill Reddit with fabricated content to sell product(s).

Astral AI Agents in Action

Savannah showed her AI agents in action in a product demonstration video. The video showed how the bots found the right places to click to log into Reddit. It then navigated to the subreddit /r/productmanagement to search for conversations around ‘user research.’

Once the posts were found, AI agents wrote a reply relevant to them that promoted a product without sounding too sales-y. Unfortunately, if businesses start deploying these agents at large, Reddit will become a dumping ground of AI-generated content, losing its authenticity and trust among dedicated users.

Why People Think it’s a Terrible Idea

The biggest reason people aren’t impressed with Astral AI agents is because it was primarily designed to get around Reddit’s API restrictions, which were created to keep such spam away. These AI agents are just another way to pass spam filters and promote products using fabricated content that appears to be authentic.

Many individuals rely on big forums like Reddit to find real, unfiltered, and unbiased human-created content. However, AI agents like these will dilute the reliability of Reddit, making people question everything they read online.

Some link services like Astral AI agents to the ‘dead internet theory.’ According to this theory, AI agents create and automate most social media accounts and content posted on the internet.

These agents can instantly create posts on any searched topic alongside AI-generated images to farm engagement on different platforms. If businesses begin deploying Astral AI agents in bulk, it will make it challenging for Reddit users to determine what’s real and fake.

Potential Implications Worth Considering

While there are numerous implications of using AI agents to create content on Reddit and other public forums, the biggest is eroding users’ trust and sense of community. If Reddit gets filled with AI-generated comments, users won’t understand whether they’re interacting with real humans or a machine. It will significantly hamper genuine connections and make it challenging to trust any information.

AI agents also raise ethical concerns, as many debate whether it’s fair to have an AI pretend to be human(s) to sell a particular product. Some expect the influx of such AI-generated content will negatively affect genuine content creators as their content may be misjudged as AI-generated.

Tips to Identify AI-Generated Content on Reddit

You cannot stop businesses from deploying AI agents to push fabricated content on forums, but you can be mindful while interacting or consuming online content. If you frequently use forums, you can identify whether the content is human or machine-generated using common identifiers. Most of the AI-generated content doesn’t have any unique perspective. It lacks any depth and personal touch.

Short and crisp sentences are also hallmark features of AI-generated content. You can also find repetition of particular words and phrases, which may sound robotic. If you notice any of these parameters, consider avoiding any interaction or further consumption.

Tackling the AI-Generated Menace

Platforms like Reddit may consider deploying stringent AI-detection capabilities to identify content generated by AI agents. Moderators of popular Reddit groups will have to explore smarter ways to detect spam and block suspicious accounts. Forum users can use their critical thinking skills to determine whether the content they’re reading is authentic or machine-generated. These steps may limit the damage caused by AI-generated content flooding online forums.
