12 Countries Where Gun Violence Is Out of Control (Besides America)

Though publicized mainly in America, gun violence is a significant issue affecting many countries around the world. More than 600 people tragically lose their lives every day as a result of gun violence. We have researched an extensive dataset compiled by the Small Arms Survey to create a list of 12 countries that suffer the most from gun violence. 

Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America. It is known for its culture and the Amazon Basin. The country is also famous for its dominance in soccer and its massive carnivals. Unfortunately, Brazil also struggles significantly with gun violence. In 2021, there were 52,102 deaths due to gun violence, the highest in any country.

With around 800,000 registered firearm owners, President Lula da Silva has taken steps to reduce the number of guns civilians can own from four to two.

India

The most populated country in the world, India is known for its rich history, diverse cultures, and its cricket craze. It is home to famous landmarks like the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.

Despite India’s strict gun laws, illegal firearms remain a concern. In 2021, around 50,000 deaths were caused by gun violence. However, when considering the number of deaths per 100,000 people, the rate is relatively low at 3.6.

Afghanistan

Famous for its rugged mountain terrains and rich cultural heritage, Afghanistan has faced significant challenges over the past few decades, mainly due to ongoing conflicts involving the Taliban.

They have the highest per capita death rate from gun violence, with 112 deaths per 100,000 people. In 2021, 45,000 people died of gun violence, making it the third highest globally. 

Mexico

Mexico is a neighboring country of the USA known for its ancient civilizations, cuisine, and beautiful beaches. Mexico was home to the Aztec Empire and the Mayan Empire, and the ruins of both civilizations are still present in the country.

However, Mexico also faces significant challenges with gun violence. The government has the fifth most unregistered firearms among UN countries, contributing to the problem. In 2021, 44,000 people were killed by guns, and the rate of gun-related deaths per 100,000 people is high at 32.7.

Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, rich in natural resources. It has a vibrant arts culture, and its film industry, known as Nollywood, is globally recognized. With over 250 different ethnic groups present, Nigeria also faces high levels of criminal activity and gun violence.

The country ranks second in Africa for organized crime, and in 2021, there were 37,000 deaths due to gun violence. The widespread availability of illegal firearms is a significant contributor to these high numbers.

Yemen

Yemen, located on the Arabian Peninsula, is known for its ancient history and unique architecture. However, the country has recently faced significant political and humanitarian challenges.

One of the poorest countries in the Middle East, Gun violence is a considerable factor in Yemen’s ongoing crisis. 61 deaths per 100,000 people make it one of the most affected countries globally.

Jamaica

Jamaica, an island nation in the Caribbean, is known for its music and athletes. The country is home to Bob Marley, one of the most excellent musicians ever, and Usain Bolt, the fastest-recorded man. Despite its small size, Jamaica struggles with gun violence.

In 2021, gun violence caused the death of 1,823 people. While this number is small compared to other countries, it has one of the highest rates of gun-related deaths in the world, at 64.5 per 100,000 people.

South Africa

Located at the southern tip of Africa, aptly named South Africa is renowned for its natural beauty and its rich natural resources. The country’s economy benefits from mining and tourism, with attractions like Kruger National Park drawing visitors.

However, South Africa faces a significant challenge with gun violence. The situation in South Africa is so dire that currently, over 2.35 million illegal firearms are in circulation across the country.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is in Africa and rich in natural resources like minerals. The DRC has suffered from political instability and has been termed a “least developed state” by the United Nations.

Armed warfare between rebels and government forces has led to six million people being displaced with many casualties. In 2021, over 20,000 people were killed due to gun violence. With the ongoing conflicts, the DRC remains one of the most dangerous in terms of gun violence, with little sign of improvement.

Colombia

Home to the Amazon Rainforest, Colombia is known for its beaches and coffee production. However, the country is probably most famous for being Pablo Escobar’s base for his drug empire.

Eighteen thousand people were killed using firearms in 2021, with an average of 36 deaths per 100,000 people linked to gun violence. Reports indicate that violence has been increasing in 2024, making Colombia one of the most dangerous countries.

Central African Republic (CAR)

The Central African Republic is famous for its diverse wildlife and natural resources. The country has a variety of ethnic groups and a rich cultural heritage, but it has faced significant political instability.

With 77 deaths per 100,000 people caused by firearms, CAR has the second-highest gun violence rate in the world after Afghanistan. Ongoing conflicts suggest that there will be minimal improvement shortly.

Syria

Situated in the Middle East, Syria has a rich history, especially with ancient civilizations. The country is known for its traditional crafts and cuisine. However, it is currently suffering from a humanitarian crisis. It is ranked the fourth worst country in the world in the Fragile State Index.

Gun violence is rampant in the war-torn country, with over 12,000 people killed by guns in 2021. The death rate from gun violence is 59 per 100,000 people, making it one of the most dangerous countries globally.
